Undergraduate Conducting Master Class
Dr. Paul Rardin, clinician
Thank you to all of the applicants for the 2012 ACDA Undergraduate Conducting Masterclass. Your collective impressive work made the committee's decision a difficult one, but I am very pleased to announce the following four conductors, who will join Paul Rardin and the Vassar College Choir in Providence, RI this February:

Conducting Master Class teacher Dr. Paul Rardin (Temple University) will
be joined by a small group of auditioned undergraduate conductors and a
college-level demonstration choir to focus on effective conducting
gestures, with emphasis on finding balance between clarity and
expression.
Topics will include:
- Clarity: gestures that lead the ensemble musically
- Support: gestures that underscore healthy and beautiful singing
- "Muse-icality": gestures that demonstrate the composer's intent and the conductor's imagination
- Improvisation: gestures that respond to the sounds the conductor is actually hearing
Paul Rardin joined the faculty of Temple University as director of
choral activities in 2011. He conducts the Concert Choir, teaches
graduate conducting, and oversees the six-choir program at Temple's
Boyer College of Music and Dance. He previously taught at the University
of Michigan and Towson University, where his choirs appeared with the
Kirov Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra,
and Baltimore Choral Arts Society. Under his direction the University of
Michigan Men's Glee Club performed at the 2010 ACDA Central Division
Convention. Rardin is a graduate of Williams College and the University
of Michigan, where he received the M.M. in composition and the D.M.A. in
conducting.
Rardin has served as a guest conductor for all-state choirs in eleven
states, and in 2009 conducted the MENC All-Eastern Division High School
Chorus. He has presented clinics for state, regional, and national
conferences of the American Choral Directors Association. His
engagements for 2011-2012 include conducting the New York All-State
Mixed Chorus and ACDA Western Division Men's Honor Choir, and headlining
for the Oregon ACDA Summer Workshop. His settings of spirituals and folk
songs are published by Santa Barbara Music Publishing, and his articles
have appeared in the ACDA publications Choral Journal, Troubadour, and
Resound. Rardin lives in suburban Philadelphia with his wife, Sandy.
